If you're gay or lesbian and planning your wedding, read our guide. Find out what you need to know, where to go and how to organise a wedding day to remember.

Whether you are looking to get married legally by having a civil ceremony or you’d rather have a more informal commitment ceremony there are still lots of important details to consider. As with any conventional marriage there are decisions to be made; will you be arranging a glitzy affair or something more simple and understated? What time of year will you be organizing the wedding and also how much do you have to spend? What’s more important with same sex marriage is to be clear on the finer points to ensure that your big day is everything you dreamed and more!

Ceremony
Firstly it is important to find out what is available to you and what you ultimately want out of your union. If you are having a commitment ceremony you may want something less formal. With a civil ceremony you will both decide whether you would like it to include religious elements. If you like the idea of getting married in a church call them to find out if they will be open to your service. Ultimately you need to find someone you are comfortable with to officiate over the ceremony. You may want to get legal input to explain the finer points of declaring a civil partnership, union or marriage so that you fully understand what you are getting into.

The Vows
As with most wedding unions the wedding vows are an important part to the proceedings. In same sex marriages it is usual that you will have to write your own vows to one another from scratch. You may find this rather daunting but focus your thoughts and don’t expect to get it right first time. Write and rewrite. Another way to take the unknown stress out of the big day is to arrange a rehearsal so that you are clear in your head about what you are saying and when.

Details
Decide on the dress code for your union and discuss what you will wear. You may want to wear the same suits but in different styles or you may want to contrast what you are wearing to that of your partner. Ultimately it is important that you feel comfortable in whatever you wear. You will need to discuss what you will exchange as a sign of your commitment to one another; it could be rings, bracelets or necklaces.

Reception
When it comes to booking the venue it is important that they are gay friendly and it is important to check in advance before you book. Find a DJ and photographer that is used to offering a high standard of gay friendly service. Ask your friends for playlist recommendations. Clarify with the couple the relationship they have with attending friends and family so that any awkward situations can be avoided on the day.
