A paradise in the Atlantic Ocean
São Miguel known as “The Green Island” is the largest and most populated island with a population around 150.000 inhabitants. The average temperature is approximately 17°C. (Summer months approximately 23°C.) The weather alternates quickly from rain to sun. This beautiful island reminds of a botanic garden with flowers all year round, but the magnificent display of flowers is most intensive during the summer months. Here you will also find beautiful lakes, sandy beaches, rolling hills, high mountains and green plains. Activities such as whale watching, swimming with dolphins, walking and trekking, diving, golf and many other outdoor activities. Some places to visit: - Volcano craters as Furnas Lake, Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake), Sete Cidades (Twin lakes) - The Terra Nostra Park is one of the most beautiful parks in São Miguel with a pool of thermal iron water where you can relax in hot water. - Pico da Vara, the highest point on the island. - The area of the Caldeiras at the lake, serve as a natural kitchen. Cooking by burying pots of food in the earth. - Two excellent golf courses, Bathala and Furnas - Chá Gorreana, which is the only tea plantation in Europe. - In Faja de Baixo you can find a pineapple plantation. - Ponta Delgada, the capital Drive carefully on the island. Remember that the first car landed on the island at the end of 1970’s. Most streets are dimensioned for horses and wagons. Look out for cows! Here there are more cows than people. If you come to the Azores, it is like you travel 30 years back in time. It is very peaceful. |
