The Role of Groomsmen in a Wedding

wedding groomsmen duties

The groomsman has an important roll at the wedding. Your job is to make sure the wedding runs smoothly for the groom and help solve any problems that might occur - which require both practical as well as emotional support.

So you’ve been invited to be a groomsman but what does it involve? Well ultimately you are there to support the groom and make his wedding day run without a hitch. How much involvement you have will depend on the bride and groom. Start off by asking questions and finding out what is expected of you. You might be expected to organize and arrange guests on the day, you could end up being tasked to find six pairs of the same cufflinks or perhaps you’ll just be needed to sweet talk the mother of the bride. Whatever it is you’ll need to know as early as possible in order to prepare. So keep the lines of communication open and set aside dedicated planning time; away from a bar!

Get Practical
The best way to fulfill your groomsman duties is to get practical and help the groom to get things ready for his part of the big day. Sitdown with groom and go through the timeline of things that need to be done and allow him to delegate certain jobs to you. Change the role to suit you and your relationship. If you only feel comfortable handling small details say so otherwise it could all go horribly wrong and you will be out of your comfort zone and you could potentially spoil the event. So if you only want to collect the corsages and pick up guests from the airport don’t get stuck arranging the tuxedos and finding matching cumberbunds.

Plan the Batchelor Party
With the help of the other groomsmen you can plan a great party as a send off to the groom. Say goodbye to your buddies singledom in a way that is appropriate for him and doesn’t leave him feeling uncomfortable. A bar crawl and strip club might be the way to go or maybe it’s just too clichéd. Why not go deep sea fishing, clay pigeon shooting or wine tasting you could even try a weekend city break.

Make a Speech
If you’ve been asked to make a speech or toast at the wedding you really need to sitdown and plan what you are going to say. Remember the occasion; it may seem like a good idea to go for the laughs but if you do you need to be subtle rather than brash. You don’t want to fall flat and have to recover from unfunny jokes and awkward glances. The key to being successful is being true to your own personal style. If you’re not comfortable public speaking keep it short, sweet and focus on the happy event.

Do Something Special
So you haven’t got much to do other than turn up for the stag party. Why not try to arrange something special for the happy couple and add to their big day in a unique way. The key to any plans you may have is to run it by the groom. Fireworks are a good way to add to the event or you could arrange singing waiting staff for a fun interlude.
