Choosing the Right Bridal Gloves
It may not have crossed your mind to wear bridal gloves but for the added touch of elegance they provide it is worth it. Read our guide to help you decide whether you need to wear gloves and the different types of glove that you can buy.
History
Gloves have always been a popular accessory throughout history. During the Renaissance, it was common for women to wear gloves that were excessively embroidered and perfumed, made out of silk, kid leather or linen. Queen Elizabeth I of England, owned a staggering 2,000 pairs of gloves! During the nineteenth century a pair of opera-length gloves which had 16-buttons were a must have for the wealthy. The gloves required glove stretchers, buttonhooks, powder and assistance from a second person to put on.
Glove Styles
If you are wearing a strappy or sleeveless dress you could consider a full length pair of opera gloves. For an off the shoulder dress why not opt for the short gloves. However, it might be worth considering that if you have a dress with intricate detailing and embroidery, then you might do well to choose a simple leather glove. If your dress is made of a classic material, like satin or silk, then you could choose gloves that have include some feminine trim in lace.
Fabrics
You could match the fabric of your gloves to the fabric of your dress. Also take into account during what time of the year you will have your wedding. If it's during the summer, then choose cotton and in winter velvet is an ideal fabric.
Be Inspired
You only have to watch period films to be inspired about your choice of bridal gloves. Jane Austen's Emma and Pride and Prejudice are classic films to reference.
Reservations about wearing gloves
If you're nervous about wearing gloves and what to do with your glove during the exchange of rings in the ceremony, the easiest option is to unstitch the seam of the ring finger so you can slip your finger out; tuck the dangling empty finger back inside the glove. You can also remove the glove entirely and pass it to your maid of honour.
